A seven-day workshop on “Engendering Gender through Learning and Integrating Human Rights as a way of Life” got off to a grand start at the seminar room of Women’s Studies Centre of Punjabi University, Patiala on March 21st,2012. The workshop was organized in collaboration with People’s Decade for Human Rights Education (PDHRE), New York. The People’s Decade for Human Rights Education (PDHRE), is a people’s movement for promoting learning about human rights and integrating them in people’s daily life in the words as well as in actions. The workshop is being attended by 34 university and university school-teachers.
While introducing the theme of the workshop, Dr Manju Verma , Director of the centre, said that no single phase in human history has been more privileged to bear the mission and burden of human destiny than the phase of human rights. The language of human rights is able to expose the immorality and violence in the 21st century. She further elaborated the need for organizing such kind of workshops because the threats like poverty, warfare, environmental degradation, the negative impacts of globalization, illiteracy, labour exploitation etc are bearing down our right to be human. She expected that the workshop would facilitate the development of new political culture based on human rights moving from charity to dignity.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Jaspal Singh , Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala. Speaking on the occasion, the Vice- Chancellor congratulated the Director of Women’s Studies for the centre’s contribution and endeavors associated with the sesitization and awareness programmes related to women issues and emphasised for gender inclusive development and human rights learning.
